Winner of the Berlin Opera Academy’s Luxton award and a finalist in the 2024 LCS Singing Competition, Samuel Jenkins is a British tenor of “operatic richness and delectability” (Haddo Arts). Samuel trained at the Royal College of Music as an H.R. Taylor Trust scholar and graduated with Distinction, studying under the late David Rendall. In demand as an oratorio soloist, Samuel has recently performed Bach’s Magnificat and Johannespassion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Britten’s St Nicolas and Handel’s Messiah in London, Oxford and Edinburgh. As a recitalist, Samuel has programmed French mélodies by Ravel, Gounod and Poulenc with acclaimed pianist Roger Vignoles, and performed Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn together. He has given performances of Schumann’s Dichterliebe at the Edinburgh Festival and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings in London. Samuel’s operatic roles have seen him on stage as Tamino (The Magic Flute), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Don Carlos (Les Indes Galantes), and Dorvil (La scala di seta). He has sung in numerous recent productions at Glyndebourne, spanning works by Rossini, Puccini, Wagner, Poulenc and Ethel Smyth. On disk, Samuel has recorded Stravinsky’s Mass with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Leighton’s Crucifixus, for which he was commended by Gramophone. Samuel also holds an MA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, where he specialised in African and Indian postcolonial works.
